Before You Add a New Service: A Financial Checklist

A short checklist to confirm a new treatment will earn its place on your menu before you invest in equipment, training and marketing.

New treatments keep a menu fresh and can attract new clients. They also bring costs: equipment, training, product stock, marketing and room time taken from existing services. Run through this checklist before committing.

1. Evidence of demand

  • Are existing clients asking for it?
  • Do nearby competitors offer it, and how busy are they?
  • Does it fit your client base and brand?

2. Price and contribution

  • What price can you realistically charge?
  • What is the product or consumable cost per treatment?
  • What will provider pay be per treatment?
  • What is the expected contribution margin per treatment and per room hour?

3. Upfront investment

  • Equipment purchase, lease or financing
  • Training and certification
  • Opening product inventory
  • Launch marketing

4. Room and provider capacity

  • Which room and which providers will perform it?
  • Will it displace existing, higher-margin services at busy times?

5. Break-even

Treatments needed per month = monthly fixed cost of the new service ÷ contribution per treatment

Compare this with a conservative demand estimate. If break-even requires your most optimistic forecast, think again.

6. Cash impact

Add the upfront investment and the expected monthly results to your cash forecast. How long until the service pays back its launch costs?

7. Regulatory and clinical requirements

Check scope-of-practice rules, supervision requirements, consent forms and insurance coverage for the new service in your state.

8. Success measures

Decide in advance what success looks like at three and six months: treatments per month, contribution and rebooking. Review against those targets and be willing to adjust or stop.

A new service that passes this checklist is far more likely to add profit, rather than just add complexity.
