Hiring another injector is one of the biggest decisions a growing med spa makes. It can unlock growth, or it can create months of losses if demand is not there. Run the numbers first.
1. Is there unmet demand?
Look for evidence, not hope:
- Existing injectors booked out two or more weeks
- Waitlists or clients turned away
- Prime time slots full while weekdays are quiet
- Consultation requests you cannot schedule quickly
If current injectors have open time, the problem is demand or scheduling, not capacity.
2. Do you have room capacity?
A new provider needs a treatment room at the times clients want. If rooms are already full at peak times, a new hire may only be able to work off-peak hours, which slows the ramp-up.
3. Model the ramp-up
New providers, even experienced ones, take time to build a book. Build a month-by-month estimate of bookings, for example 30% of capacity in month one, rising over several months. Be conservative.
4. Calculate monthly contribution
For each month:
Contribution = (revenue from their treatments − product used − their compensation)
Include employer payroll taxes and any guaranteed base pay. In the early months, contribution is often negative under a salaried or base-pay model.
5. Add the fixed costs
Recruiting, training, licensing, malpractice coverage, marketing to build their book and any equipment they need.
6. Find the breakeven month and the cash needed
Add up the monthly results. The month cumulative contribution turns positive is your payback point. The lowest point of the cumulative total is the cash you need in reserve to support the hire.
7. Stress test
What if bookings ramp up half as fast? What if a key existing injector leaves? If the plan only works in the best case, consider a part-time or commission-heavy start.
Decide with the numbers in front of you
Hiring with a clear ramp-up model, a cash reserve and defined targets for months three and six makes the decision far safer, and gives you an objective way to judge whether it is working.
