Membership revenue feels predictable because it arrives every month. But it is only as stable as your retention. A small rise in cancellations, repeated every month, quietly erodes your recurring revenue. These metrics give you early warning.
1. Monthly churn rate
Cancellations this month ÷ members at the start of the month
Track it every month. Even a modest monthly churn rate compounds into a large share of members lost over a year, so improvements of a single point are worth chasing.
2. Net member growth
New members minus cancellations. If marketing is bringing in members but churn is rising, net growth tells the real story.
3. Days since last visit
Members who have not booked in 60 or 90 days are the most likely to cancel. Pull this list monthly and reach out personally. A reminder of their available credit, or a recommended treatment, often brings them back.
4. Credit balance per member
For credit-based memberships, rising average balances mean members are paying but not visiting. That is both a liability you owe and a sign of disengagement.
5. Member lifetime value
Average monthly contribution per member × average months a member stays
This tells you how much you can afford to spend to acquire a member. If members stay a long time, a higher acquisition cost is justified.
6. Revenue concentration
What share of total revenue comes from members? A high share brings stability, but also makes churn more painful. Know the number.
Turning metrics into forecasts
With churn and new-member rates, you can project member count and recurring revenue for the next six months. Combine that with expected redemptions of banked credit to see future demand on providers and product, and the cash you will need to deliver it.
A monthly member report
One page is enough: members at start, new, cancelled, at end, churn rate, members with no visit in 90 days, total credit balance and average credit per member. Reviewed every month, it turns membership from a hopeful line on the P&L into something you can manage.
