Many med spa owners delay price increases for years because they fear losing clients. Meanwhile product, payroll and rent costs rise every year, and margins shrink without anyone deciding to accept that. A planned, well-communicated increase is usually far less risky than it feels.
Signals that it is time
- Product costs have risen since your last price change.
- Payroll has increased through raises or new hires, and prices have not moved.
- Your schedule is consistently full or booked weeks in advance.
- Your contribution margin on key services has fallen over the last year.
- You have not changed prices in more than 12 to 18 months.
How much to raise
Base the increase on numbers, not instinct:
- Calculate current contribution margin per service.
- Set the target margin you need.
- Work out the price that delivers it.
Often a modest increase on high-volume services, such as a dollar or two per neuromodulator unit or a small increase per syringe, restores most of the lost margin.
Run the numbers on client loss
Ask how many clients you could lose and still earn the same. With a 50% contribution margin, a 10% price increase means you could lose roughly one in six clients' worth of volume and still earn the same contribution. In practice, far fewer leave.
How to communicate it
- Give notice. Tell clients 30 to 60 days ahead, by email and at checkout.
- Explain simply. Rising product and staffing costs, and your commitment to quality and safety, are reasons clients understand.
- Honor booked appointments and current packages at the old price.
- Keep it consistent. Make sure the front desk, booking site and price list all change on the same date.
Members and packages
Existing members may keep their rate for a period, such as until renewal, while new members join at the new rate. Prepaid packages should always be honored at the price paid.
Make it routine
Clinics that review prices every year and adjust in small steps rarely face the big, painful increases that come after years of standing still. Put an annual pricing review on the calendar.
